Engaging in Phenomenological Inquiry

Conversation, guidance, and the continuing work of learning

Learning phenomenology is rarely a solitary undertaking. Although much of the work involves reading, reflecting, and writing alone, our understanding often develops through conversation with others who share an interest in the questions we are pursuing.

For graduate students and researchers, opportunities for such conversations are not always readily available. Someone may be drawn to phenomenology as a way of exploring lived experience yet find themselves working in an academic setting where there is limited opportunity for sustained engagement with phenomenological research and writing.

The Phenomenology of Practice Project seeks to respond, in a modest way, to this need. Alongside its educational offerings and public reflections, PoPP creates opportunities for individual conversation, thoughtful feedback, and continuing mentorship for those seeking to deepen their phenomenological practice.

Opportunities for Conversation and Guidance

There are different moments in phenomenological inquiry when a conversation with someone more experienced in the practice can be helpful. Sometimes it is a question that is only beginning to take shape. At other times, it is a passage of writing that seems to resist further development, or a desire for continuing dialogue as an inquiry unfolds.

Individual Conversations

An opportunity to discuss an emerging phenomenological question, consider methodological possibilities, or explore a particular challenge encountered in reading, researching, or writing phenomenologically.

Reading and Responding to Writing

Phenomenological writing often benefits from a careful and attentive reader. I offer opportunities for focused feedback on selected passages of writing, with attention to how lived experience is being approached, how meaning is emerging, and where further reflection might lead.

Continuing Mentorship

For a small number of individuals, there may be opportunities for a more sustained mentoring relationship. Such arrangements would be developed through conversation, taking account of the person's interests, stage of inquiry, and the kind of guidance that might be most helpful.

These opportunities are intended to complement, rather than replace, the work of academic supervisors and research committees. My role is not to direct another person's research, but to support the development of their own phenomenological understanding and practice.

Beginning a Conversation

If you are considering an individual conversation, would welcome a response to a piece of writing, or are interested in the possibility of continuing mentorship, I invite you to get in touch.

It would be helpful to hear a little about your interests, the phenomenological question or inquiry you are pursuing, and the kind of guidance you are seeking. An initial exchange will allow us to consider whether I might be able to offer something helpful and what an appropriate arrangement could look like.

There is no obligation associated with making an enquiry. Any arrangement for consultation, feedback, or mentorship would be discussed and agreed upon in advance.
